Climbing Clouds

WHILE IT SEEMS summer is on its last leg, for us, the fun has just started. After filming three music videos back-to-back with singer-songwriter Jetty Rae in June, we are happy to announce that the first video for the title track “Climbing Clouds” off of Jetty’s upcoming EP is completed and was released on Tuesday. Take a look!

“Climbing Clouds” was filmed almost exclusively in Charlevoix during the first two days of our six-plus days of shooting. On the first evening, almost immediately after we began, our new Canon 5D Mark III broke due to a manufacturing error. Fortunately a backup camera was available, but the Mark III had to be sent in to Canon Repairs.

Everything about this project further instilled in us the value of flexibility.  Like many productions do, we experienced equipment failure, sudden weather changes, an intense shooting schedule, last minute location changes...BUT I can confidently say that I don’t think there’s a minute of the footage which suffered as a result.

It seems like we spent almost all of June and July filming a half dozen projects, but Climbing Clouds was the big one.  We had to make Climbing Clouds a success if we were going to be able to go into any of our other projects and be able to enjoy the process and trust that everything would come together.  And it did!  The production and the process was so enjoyable.

There were so many little quirks to the production; every day was so interesting. We were working with a puppet cloud (to later be replaced with a CG cloud), we made it rain indoors, we filmed late into the night… really, the best way I can sum up the nature of the production is this:

Climbing clouds is about 75 shots, and 35 of those shots require some sort special effect. , whether it be filming a cloud that's actually not there or something simple like having to erase strings, sticks, markers, or even people out of the shot.  Only about half of the effects actually involved creating clouds, but those were some of the most fun.

If anyone is interested in seeing more about how we did the clouds, let me know and I'll find some time to put some videos together.

Thanks for watching!  And our gratitude goes to Christine Jackson for taking many of these photos.

I am amazed at what you were able to do in CG for this video! It all seemed to flawless too; maybe to the trained eye you could tell it was CG, but to me all the clouds and everything looked as if the were real life! Incredible work John Paul and Matthew and Katie! The video turned out AMAZING!!!
